Battery storage is often the most expensive single component in a Nigerian solar system. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries — the current standard for residential solar — range from ₦280,000 for a small 5 kWh unit to over ₦2.5 million for a 30 kWh bank designed for large homes.

What to check before buying

5 things to verify before buying a lithium battery in Nigeria

1. Verify the BMS (Battery Management System)

Every quality lithium battery has a BMS that protects against overcharge, over-discharge, and overheating. Ask your supplier for the BMS spec sheet. A battery without a certified BMS is a fire risk.

2. Check cycle count guarantee

A genuine LiFePO4 battery should guarantee at least 3,000 cycles at 80% DoD. Some budget brands claim this but don't deliver. Ask for written warranty documentation.

3. Buy from an authorised distributor

Counterfeit Felicity and Blue Carbon batteries have been found in Nigerian markets. Buy from authorised distributors only — your installer should be able to verify the supplier chain.

4. Confirm inverter compatibility

Not all batteries communicate correctly with all inverters. Pylontech, for example, works best with Growatt and Victron. Mismatched battery-inverter pairs can prevent proper charging and void warranties on both units.

5. Understand the warranty terms for Nigeria

Ask explicitly: where is warranty service handled? Some brands have Nigerian warranty centres (Felicity, Blue Carbon). Others require international RMA. Know before you buy.
